The Alannah and Madeline Foundation is a national charity protecting children from violence and its devastating impact. The foundation was set up in memory of Alannah and Madeline Mikac, aged six and three, who were tragically killed with their mother and 32 others at Port Arthur, Tasmania on 28 April 1996. Their vision is that every child will live in a safe and supportive environment. The foundation cares for children who have experienced or witnessed violence and they run programs which prevent violence in the lives of children.

Each year, tens of thousands of children in Australia enter emergency care. In response to continued demands to support children in emergency care, The Alannah and Madeline Foundation introduced Buddy Bags in 2007. Buddy Bags are backpacks containing new and essential items, such as toiletries, pyjamas, socks, underwear and a pillowcase, as well as comfort items such as a book, photo frame and teddy bear. Many children enter this unfamiliar world with just the clothes they are wearing and without these basic necessities.

The Buddy Bags Charity Hunt is a fun and energising team event that will have teams exploring the amazing locations around the CBD, while collecting all the items to put together Buddy Bags for the children. Teams also have the option to conclude the event at The Alannah and Madeline Foundation office in South Melbourne, where they can witness the miracles of these Buddy Bags.

“Kids arrive at the refuge at all hours…when they are dropped off it’s just like entering another world for them. It’s frightening and so hard for the kids. We give them a Buddy Bag as soon as we can and they are so excited, that smile lights up their whole face.”
